More Maigret for Christmas

The famous French detective Maigret, returns to the small screen this Christmas in a feature-length TV special entitled “Maigret in Montmartre” on ITV on Christmas Eve. Once again Rowan Atkinson of Mr Bean fame plays the leading role in another adaptation of the series of books written by the highly prolific Belgian author Georges Simenon. Simenon wrote more than 70 Maigret books over a period of 41 years after the publication of the first novel Pietr the Latvian (10413) in 1931.  He also wrote many short stories featuring him.

The gruff detective has been portrayed many times on TV, as well as in film and on radio, in several countries over the years. Some of you may remember Charles Laughton as the first English language Maigret in the 1950 film “The Man on the Eiffel Tower”. The first British TV series starred Rupert Davies in the title role in 52 adaptations for the BBC aired throughout the 1960s. Other notable actors who have taken on the role include Richard Harris and Michael Gambon.
