6 November 2017

Three of Ian McEwan’s novels have been adapted for the screen and will be appearing over the next few months.

The Child in Time aired recently as a TV adaptation for the BBC and featured Benedict Cumberbatch playing the main character. The book tells the story of Stephen Lewis, a successful author of children's books, who takes his three-year-old daughter on a routine Saturday morning trip to the supermarket. While queueing at the checkout, his attention is distracted and the little girl is kidnapped. Lewis spirals into a grief which affects every aspect of his life. This novel won the Whitbread prize for fiction in 1987.

The Children Act is being made into a film starring Emma Thompson as high court Judge Fiona Maye who is asked to try the case of a seventeen-year-old boy who is refusing medical treatment on religious grounds. Actor Stanley Tucci plays the part of Fiona’s husband who stands by and watches as the case affects his wife and gradually takes over her life. The film is set for release in the UK in April 2018.

On Chesil Beach has also been made into a film starring Billy Howle and Saoirse Ronan who also starred in the 2007 film Atonement based on another of Ian McEwan’s novels. On Chesil Beach is the story of Edward and Florence who are sitting in a hotel overlooking Chesil beach after getting married that morning and who are anxious about the wedding night to come. This is a story about how the entire course of a life can be changed by a gesture not made or a word not spoken. The novel was shortlisted for the Man Booker prize in 2007 and the film is set for release in the UK in January 2018.
