Hiking History!
24 April 2012
Today marks the 80th Anniversary of the Kinder Scout Mass Trespass. The trespassers departed from a quarry in Hayfield and the continuing campaign for the right to roam led to the setting up of the National Parks we are all familiar with today. In 1951 the Peak District National Park was the first of these.
The Derby Telegraph reports in further detail as follows:-
Eighty years ago on April 24th 1932, almost 500 working class ramblers took part in a wilful act of trespass that changed the way we treat some of Britain's most picturesque countryside. They deliberately marched across restricted land at Kinder Scout in Derbyshire's Peak District, believing they should have the right to ramble across open country, even if it was owned by someone. They were involved in brief hand-to-hand struggles with keepers brought in specially to try to halt the well-publicised event. But they persisted with their march and their actions helped bring changes to the way the public is allowed access to vast acres of Britain.
Eventually, the walkers victoriously marched on to Ashop Head. Several were arrested and five received jail sentences of several months on charges of incitement and riotous assembly. The Mass Trespass was a pivotal moment in the campaign for better access to the countryside. Its success paved the way for the creation of the National Parks and, in 1951, the Peak District National Park was established, opening Kinder Scout to the public for the first time.
To mark the 80th anniversary of the trespass, a week of events is being organised in the north of the county. Trespass to Treasure anniversary is a week of walks, talks and other events and will be launched by author and broadcaster Stuart Maconie at the Moorland Centre, Edale.
