Dame Judi Dench reveals she has AMD
20 February 2012
The actress, Dame Judi Dench, has revealed she has age-related macular degeneration. She admitted this in an interview with The Mirror newspaper (18.2.12) whilst publicising her new film ‘The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel’, released on February 24.
In the article she confessed: “I can’t read scripts any more because of the trouble with my eyes. So somebody comes in and reads them to me, like telling me a story. It’s usually my daughter or my agent or a friend and actually I like that, because I sit there and imagine the story in my mind. I’ve got what my ma had, macular degeneration, which you get when you get old. I had wet in one eye and dry in the other and they had to do these injections and I think it’s arrested it. I hope so.”
Dame Judi went on to say that she plans to buy a digital reader to enlarge words and that she also loves talking books. Both her late husband Michael Williams and her daughter, Finty, have recorded several titles.
Calibre Audio Library has a number of Finty’s books including: Julia Golding’s Cat Among the Pigeons (Catalogue no. 16839) and Jacqueline Wilson’s The Diamond Girls (16616).
